Sally Heinrich is an illustrator, printmaker and writer, who has published and exhibited widely in Australia and Asia. She has illustrated more than forty books as well as writing and illustrating her own picture books, novels and non-fiction books.

One Step at a Time, written by Jane Jolly, was an Honour Book in the 2016 CBCA Picture Book of the Year Awards and Papa Sky, also by Jane, was a Notable Book in the 2018 Awards. Their latest collaboration,  Mama Ocean, was published in 2020. 

Sally’s commissioned artwork ranges from wine labels to a mural for the Singapore Zoo, painting a life-size baby elephant sculpture for Melbourne Zoo and community arts projects.

If she’s not at her desk drawing, her favourite place to be is walking in the bush. Love of the environment and a search for a sense of place and belonging are a big part of what inspires her. Her work also draws on her experiences travelling and living in Asia and reflects her deep interest in Asian culture, art, religion, and folklore and traditions from both East and West.

Her original artwork and linoprints have been exhibited in Australia and Asia including in the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize and are held in collections around the world.Her work has been recognised through fellowships from the Asialink Foundation, The Ian Reed Foundation, The May Gibbs Children’s Literature Trust, Varuna-the Writer’s Centre and Arts SA.

‘In 2020, Sally was awarded the Max Fatchen Fellowship as part of the Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature.

Sally is currently working on a number of projects, including a very long wordless picture book and a novel.A book featuring her linoprints of South Australian Icons is due to be published early 2024.
